As another guiding year, and my time as BGO Chief Commissioner, draws to a close it is wonderful to write that I have once again had the opportunity to meet fantastic volunteers, girls and young women in person while continuing to meet and celebrate with others via zoom.
In May Hazel and I went to the British Virgin Islands where we met more enthusiastic volunteers and we supported them to return to face to face guiding with training sessions on a variety of themes and discussions around recruitment. We visited the Governor's residence and held the annual BVI long and good service ceremony while we were there. Once again I had the honour to present a BGO Chief Commissioner's Silver Compass brooch, this time to Yvette who is the out-going island commissioner. Many, many congratulations and thanks Yvette for all that you have done and continue to do for Girlguiding.
However it's not just me who has been out and about, in June, 17 BGO volunteers went to the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Pageant and had a fantastic time as, not only were they excited to be there for the celebration, it was another first time in person get together for many of them since the pandemic started. They all wore new BGO region neckers so that we could pick them out of the crowds while we followed the pageant on the TV. What a very special moment for them, and for us, when HM The Queen came out onto the balcony of Buckingham Palace to acknowledge everyone. I'd like to take this opportunity to offer my sincere thanks to Ella, Marcella and Jill for leading our Jubilee celebrations within BGO. They did a fantastic job.
Later this month, many BGO volunteers and girls will meet at Waddow for our first in person bi-annual pack holiday, camp and adult training event since 2019. Together '22 will be another opportunity to have fun, meet old friends, make new friends and celebrate everything that BGO stands for. Just after this event, our 8 girls who are going to the World Scout Jamboree in South Korea in 2023 along with Brooke their leader, will be off to Prague to take part in the European Scout Jamboree as part of their preparations - this will be the first time they have all be together in person. We hope that they have a great time.
As my 5 years as BGO Chief Commissioner draw to a close and Rachael and her team prepare to take the helm of the BGO galleon, I want to say again what an honour and pleasure it has been to guide with you all. I have been very fortunate to meet a lot of you and 'your' girls either in person or via zoom. I've been to camp, promise ceremonies, joined in UMA and SB activities, celebrated Bronze, Silver and Gold achievements, presented Commonwealth Knowledge awards and congratulated Queens Guide awards, presented adult volunteer long and good service awards, supported and had fun with our commissioners in virtual commissioner cafés and had fun with all volunteers in our all member calls. I am always blown away by the opportunities, challenges, and fun that you offer the girls and young women in your care while, very importantly, having fun yourselves. You are an inspiration to me and to those around you and I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart one more time for being simply, AMAZING!
Best wishes Diane
