September update from Diane

An update from Diane, British Girguiding Overseas' Chief Commissioner

Hello everyone

I hope that you had a great summer and are ready for a great guiding year?

The excellent news this September is that a growing number of BGO units are able to return to face to face guiding around the world :) This means in depth risk assessments being submitted to district, division or county commissioners before units can meet and everyone getting back into the swing of meeting in person again but, I know after meeting with ‘my’ Rainbows and Guides and seeing their very happy faces as well as the huge smiles on our adult faces what fun we can all have. Outdoor adventures, cultural visits, sleepovers and camps may also be possible in some BGO areas again so this is great news too. However there are still some areas in BGO where face to face guiding is still not possible so our adult volunteers in these areas are continuing to do their best to keep in touch with the girls and young women via virtual meetings, phone calls and distributing activity packs for the girls to do at home. I am thinking of you in particular and I am keeping my fingers crossed that Covid restrictions will change so that you can meet ‘your’ girls in person soon. Thank you for all that you are all doing for the girls in your care.

I hope that you enjoyed our virtual Action ’21 event? We have had excellent feedback from a lot of you about how much fun both the girls and adults had. Thank you for your tips on how we can improve this idea for future online events and for the excellent suggestions for names for our 2022 BGO event in the UK next July. Emma our new OAA is working hard to keep this event on next year’s calendar and we will have more news about it soon.

I’d like you to join with me in welcoming five new commissioners to their posts. Julie is the new County Commissioner in Europe, Nicky is the new County Commissioner in Asia, Rosie is the new Island Commissioner in St Helena & Ascension Islands, Kurlyn is the new Island Commissioner in Anguilla and Larissa is the new Island Commissioner in British Virgin Islands. Welcome ladies and we hope you enjoy your new roles. :)

If you would be interested in helping BGO at region level, we have three opportunities. For our young members, we are advertising for a young member to join the awards committee. We are also looking for a new Communication and PR Adviser and for a Learning and Development lead volunteer. If you are interested in knowing more, please go to the vacancy section of the website for more details. Applications should be submitted by 14th October please.

Hopefully during this guiding year, Hazel and I will be able to visit units again, and while this depends on Covid restrictions, if we can come and see you, we will do our best to do so. But until then I hope you and the girls challenge yourselves to experience new things but most of all have lots of fun.

Take care and I’ll update my blog again soon Diane
