December 28, 2020
December ended on a high - first heartfelt congratulations to Carol, our Safeguarding lead volunteer, on being awarded Guiding’s highest honour, the Silver Fish Award. It’s not often we see Carol lost for words but on the 19th December that’s what happened during the presentation via zoom. Many thanks to Girlguiding North East England for inviting Hazel and me to the presentation.
Finally on the 21st December, I joined in the BGO Singapore Christmas extravaganza. What a lot of talented Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Rangers and leaders there are in Singapore! Every section took part in Christmas messages, from Rainbows with their rendition of the Night before Christmas, to the 12 Brownies days of Christmas through to the Guides’ thoughts for Christmas and finished by the Rangers Christmas poem. It was a lovely way to end the guiding year. Thank you girls and leaders for your special extravaganza.
My living room travels have continued especially as I have been giving A Safe Space training sessions, along with the other BGO Safe Space trainers. As such, I’ve continued to meet more inspiring leaders in Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, India, Spain, Anguilla, Cayman Islands, British Virgin Islands, Turks and Caicos, Tanzania, Gibraltar, Montserrat and Saudi Arabia.
While I’ve visited these BGO countries, Adele, Carol and Nicky have been busy in Singapore, Malaysia, UAE, Cyprus, Oman, Bahrain, Nepal, Falkland Islands, Cayman Islands, Sweden, Romania and Greece.
Our first response trainers, Erica, Adele, Ali and Lynne have also been travelling and visited Tenerife, France, India, mainland Spain, Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands, Norway, Cyprus, India and Germany.
I thoroughly enjoyed joining in the 50th birthday celebrations in Dubai at the beginning of November especially when I was invited to start off the bucket of water throwing challenge. As it certainly wasn’t as warm in France as it was in Dubai I was relieved that nobody threw water over me to complete the chain!!! Thank you to all the fabulous leaders for organising a weekend of challenges, talks, activities as well as a sleepover for the 100+ girls and adults who took part.
I was delighted to congratulate through a pre-recorded message the Guides in Singapore and to visit Jessie and Izzy; also Brownies in KL for successfully completing their section Gold award. I also visited the BGO Lone Brownies in their Zoom meeting and joined in Alicia’s promise ceremony as well as congratulating Abigail and Lucy for their Silver Award and Lotty for her Bronze Award. Well done girls, I’m so proud and pleased for you!
A huge thank you to Patrick and Jill for the hours of work in designing, setting up and now maintaining our fantastic new website. I hope that you all enjoy the new-look site which you can access using tablets, phones and computers.
I would also like to sincerely thank Martin for everything that he did in running our previous website for so many years and for regularly sending me gentle reminders to empty my mail box !! Happy retirement Martin!
As we come to the start of 2021, I would like to say a huge, huge thank you to you all for everything that you did in 2020 to offer guiding in all sorts of forms to the girls in your care. It was an incredibly difficult year for us all and yet, through out it all, fun guiding in BGO continued thanks to you!
Happy New Year everyone, I hope that 2021 will be a great year for you all.
